Roofing in Little Rock

Day 27: Build day in Little Rock! We got to the site and found out we would be working on re-roofing an existing Habitat for Humanity house. Roofing is something that I had NO experience with, so I was ready to try something new! We got in the van and headed to the build site.

The only bad thing about the day was being on the roof when the temperature was in the upper 90s and the sun was beating down on us. We took shifts of about 30-45 minutes on the roof so that we wouldn’t get dehydrated or overheated.

The Little Rock Habitat for Humanity affiliate was great to us! A construction leader named John was one of the best we’ve had yet! He had some pretty funny quotes too, for example, “It’s hotter than a goat’s ass in a pepper patch”. Not sure what that means exactly.

At the end of the day, I got stuck in the second shuttle back to the host site, which means I had to sit around and wait for the van to come back and pick us up after dropping the first group off. Obviously, being in the second shuttle isn’t desirable… Except when another Habitat leader comes to the site and offers you a post-workday ice cold beer!!!! We chanted “second group, second group!” as we drank our beers.

We all went to bed early because we had another 4am morning before a 100-mile day to Clarksville.

Wow! Got your great post card ! Thank you ! I have never done roofing before, and it isnt the height I’m afraid of, it’s the FALLING from such a heightBut you toughed it out, heat and all, for as long as humanly possible. I don’t know how professionall roofers can get it done in one day.. Just amazing. And right now it sounds like you guys are Your grdoing more biking than building. Will that change? Will you guys even be able to sleep in house that’s close to being finished, and it just has to pass the code & building inspector’s ? Or is that a big no-no? Your grandma is coming to dinner tonight and we will talk abut you !

So dinner has come and gone. I made a red velvet cake because #1- I never made one before and #2 your grandma has the biggest sweet tooth in the world ! And we did talk about you. My husband and father- in -law get left out of our conversations because neither one of them are computer literate. And I mean, they don’t even know how to turn the computer on! I am trying to teach my husband how do to simple things on the computer, like check e-mails, etc, and teaching him how to navigate Fb, but I was not born to teach !
He wont sign up for classes at the nearby community college , even. Oh well. Anyway , I just wanted to let you know that other than your parents, your grandma and I your biggest fans and cheerleaders !
